Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy
Keyhole removal of the gallbladder for symptomatic gallstones — typically a day-care procedure with minimal scarring and quick recovery.
What is Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy?
Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the gold-standard treatment for symptomatic gallstones, gallbladder polyps and acute or chronic cholecystitis. Through 3–4 small keyhole incisions, the gallbladder is carefully separated from the liver and removed in its entirety. It is one of the most commonly performed laparoscopic procedures worldwide, offering excellent symptom relief with minimal scarring, less pain and rapid recovery compared to open surgery.
Conversion to open surgery is rarely needed (~1–2%) and only for safety reasons — Dr. Abhishek Katha will discuss this during your consultation.
Key Information
Procedure Facts
Standard 4-port or reduced-port laparoscopic cholecystectomy under general anaesthesia.
The gallbladder and stones are sent for routine histopathology examination.
General anaesthesia; procedure typically takes 30–60 minutes.
Day-care or single-night admission for most patients.
Most patients resume light activity within 2–3 days and return to office work in 5–7 days.
Covered under most health insurance and cashless hospital schemes.
How the Procedure Works
Diagnosis & Assessment
Clinical examination, ultrasound and routine blood work confirm the diagnosis and rule out bile duct stones.
Pre-operative Preparation
Anaesthesia review and overnight fasting — most patients are admitted on the morning of surgery.
Laparoscopic Surgery
Through 3–4 small keyhole incisions, the gallbladder is carefully dissected, the cystic duct and artery are clipped, and the gallbladder is removed — typically 30–60 minutes.
Recovery & Discharge
Patients are usually discharged on the same day or the next morning, with a normal diet resumed within 24 hours.
Outcomes
Who Needs This Treatment?
- →Symptomatic gallstones (biliary colic, indigestion, fatty-food intolerance)
- →Acute cholecystitis (gallbladder inflammation/infection)
- →Chronic cholecystitis with recurrent attacks
- →Gallbladder polyps over 1 cm or with risk features
- →Choledocholithiasis (after bile duct stone clearance)
- →Gallstone pancreatitis
Once gallstones become symptomatic, surgery is the only definitive cure. Done laparoscopically and electively, it is a remarkably safe day-care procedure that gives patients lasting relief.
