LINX Magnetic Sphincter Augmentation
A ring of titanium magnetic beads is placed around the lower oesophagus — augmenting the natural sphincter while preserving belching and vomiting reflexes.
What is LINX Magnetic Sphincter Augmentation?
LINX is a ring of titanium beads with magnetic cores placed laparoscopically around the lower oesophagus. The magnetic attraction keeps the sphincter closed at rest, preventing reflux. When swallowing or belching, the beads separate to allow normal passage of food, air, or vomit — preserving normal physiological function. Dr. Abhishek performs LINX placement at Lux Hospitals for selected GERD patients who want effective reflux control while preserving the ability to belch and vomit normally — features lost after traditional fundoplication.
How the Procedure Works
Anaesthesia & Port Placement
General anaesthesia is given; five small laparoscopic ports are placed in the upper abdomen.
Oesophageal Mobilisation
The lower oesophagus is mobilised; small hiatal hernias are repaired if present.
Sizing
A measuring device determines the exact circumference needed for the LINX ring.
Device Placement
The LINX ring is placed around the lower oesophagus and secured with its end clasp.
Closure
Ports are removed under vision; small skin incisions are closed with absorbable sutures.
Outcomes
Who Needs This Treatment?
- →Preserves normal belching and vomiting ability
- →Reversible — can be removed if needed
- →Quick procedure with day-care or overnight stay
- →Less gas-bloat than fundoplication
- →Effective long-term reflux control
- →Resume normal diet immediately — no soft diet phase needed
LINX is brilliant for patients who want their reflux fixed without losing the ability to belch or vomit. The magnetic sphincter mimics natural physiology more closely than a wrap — many patients tell me it's the operation they were waiting for.
