Oncoplastic Lumpectomy
Breast cancer is removed while simultaneously reshaping the breast using plastic surgery techniques — combining oncological safety with superior cosmetic outcome.
What is Oncoplastic Lumpectomy?
Oncoplastic lumpectomy combines oncological breast cancer surgery with plastic surgery techniques to simultaneously remove the tumour with wide margins and reshape the breast for the best cosmetic result. It is particularly valuable when the tumour is large relative to breast size, when standard lumpectomy would leave significant deformity, or when the patient wishes to improve breast shape or symmetry. Dr. Abhishek performs oncoplastic lumpectomy at Lux Hospitals, often incorporating volume displacement or volume replacement techniques, and contralateral symmetrising where indicated.
How the Procedure Works
Anaesthesia & Planning
General anaesthesia is given; incision design and reshaping plan are marked pre-operatively.
Tumour Excision
The cancer is widely excised with clear margins; specimen is orientated for pathology assessment.
Tissue Rearrangement
Remaining breast tissue is mobilised using volume displacement techniques to fill the cavity.
Reshaping & Nipple Repositioning
The breast is reshaped with layered sutures; the nipple is repositioned for symmetry if required.
Closure & Contralateral Symmetry
Skin is closed with layered absorbable sutures; contralateral symmetrising surgery is performed if planned.
Outcomes
Who Needs This Treatment?
- →Combines oncological safety with plastic surgery cosmetic techniques
- →Enables breast conservation for larger tumours
- →Avoids the contour deformity of standard lumpectomy in larger resections
- →Allows contralateral symmetrising surgery for better overall balance
- →Higher patient satisfaction with post-operative breast appearance
- →Often done in a single operation combining cancer and reconstruction
Oncoplastic surgery is where oncology and aesthetics meet. Done well, it gives patients both — cancer control and a breast they feel good about. The planning before we pick up a scalpel is everything.
