COMMON SURGICAL CONDITION
Breast Lump
A localised mass or thickening in the breast tissue — most often benign, but requiring careful evaluation to rule out cancer and determine whether removal is needed.
ABOUT THIS CONDITION
What is Breast Lump
A breast lump is any mass, swelling, or thickening in the breast tissue that feels different from the surrounding area. The vast majority of breast lumps are benign — including fibroadenomas (common in younger women), cysts, fibrocystic changes, and fat necrosis. However, because a small proportion can be cancerous, every new lump deserves prompt evaluation using the "triple test" — clinical examination, imaging (mammogram or ultrasound), and needle biopsy. Treatment ranges from reassurance and monitoring for simple cysts, to excision for persistent fibroadenomas to comprehensive cancer surgery when malignancy is confirmed. Dr. Abhishek Katha offers complete breast lump evaluation and surgical management with a sensitive, patient-centred approach at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad.
