Incision and Drainage
Quick relief for infected or abscessed cysts — a small incision is made under local anaesthesia to drain pus and relieve pain immediately.
What is Incision and Drainage?
Incision and drainage (I&D) is a quick procedure to evacuate pus from an infected cyst or skin abscess, providing immediate symptomatic relief. A small incision is made over the most prominent point of the abscess under local anaesthesia, pus is drained, the cavity is irrigated, and a small wick or packing may be left to allow continued drainage. Dr. Abhishek performs I&D at Lux Hospitals for infected sebaceous cysts, skin abscesses, and Bartholin's abscesses — followed by definitive cyst excision once inflammation settles.
How the Procedure Works
Local Anaesthesia
Local anaesthetic is infiltrated around the abscess (avoiding the centre, which is acidic and resists anaesthesia).
Incision
A small incision is made over the most prominent or fluctuant point of the abscess.
Pus Drainage
Pus is expressed; the cavity is gently probed to break up loculations and drain completely.
Irrigation
The cavity is irrigated with saline to wash out residual pus and debris.
Packing or Dressing
A small wick or packing may be left to keep the cavity open; a simple dressing is applied.
