Marsupialization
The cyst wall is stitched open to the skin to create a permanent drainage pouch — preventing recurrence of Bartholin's, pilonidal, and other recurrent cysts.
What is Marsupialization?
Marsupialization is a surgical technique used for recurrent cysts, particularly Bartholin's gland cysts and pilonidal sinus disease. Rather than removing the cyst, the cyst wall is incised and the edges are sutured to the surrounding skin, creating a permanently open pouch that drains continuously and re-epithelialises. This preserves gland function while preventing recurrence. Dr. Abhishek performs marsupialization at Lux Hospitals as a day-care procedure for selected recurrent cyst conditions where complete excision is unnecessary or risky.
How the Procedure Works
Local or Regional Anaesthesia
Local infiltration or regional block is used; general anaesthesia for selected cases.
Cyst Incision
An elliptical incision is made over the cyst to open and drain its contents.
Cavity Irrigation
The cyst cavity is washed with saline to remove pus, debris, or sebaceous material.
Suturing to Skin
The cyst wall edges are sutured to the surrounding skin with absorbable sutures, creating a permanent pouch.
Healing by Re-Epithelialisation
The pouch gradually re-epithelialises and shrinks over weeks while remaining open for drainage.
Outcomes
Who Needs This Treatment?
- →Effective for recurrent cysts where excision is risky
- →Preserves Bartholin's gland function and lubrication
- →Lower recurrence rate than simple incision and drainage
- →Day-care procedure with quick recovery
- →Avoids extensive dissection in scarred or sensitive areas
- →Particularly valuable for pilonidal sinus disease
Marsupialization is the right answer for some recurrent cysts — instead of fighting to remove every bit of capsule, we make the cavity into a permanent open pouch that simply drains. Recurrence rates are far lower than repeated I&Ds.
