Laparoscopic Appendectomy
The inflamed appendix is removed through three small keyhole incisions — the standard treatment for acute appendicitis with faster recovery and lower wound infection rates.
What is Laparoscopic Appendectomy?
Laparoscopic appendectomy is the modern standard of care for acute appendicitis, involving removal of the inflamed appendix through three small keyhole incisions. A laparoscope provides high-definition visualisation, the appendix base is secured with endoloops or a stapler, and the appendix is extracted in a retrieval bag. Dr. Abhishek performs laparoscopic appendectomy at Lux Hospitals around the clock, offering patients faster recovery, lower wound infection rates, and better cosmetic outcomes compared to open surgery.
How the Procedure Works
Anaesthesia & Pneumoperitoneum
General anaesthesia is administered; CO2 insufflation creates working space in the abdomen.
Port Placement
Three small ports are placed — one umbilical and two in the lower abdomen for instruments.
Appendix Identification
The appendix is identified, inflammation is assessed, and the mesoappendix is carefully dissected.
Base Ligation
The appendix base is secured with endoloops or an endoscopic stapler, and divided safely.
Extraction & Closure
The appendix is placed in a retrieval bag, extracted through a port, and all ports are closed.
Outcomes
Who Needs This Treatment?
- →Three small keyhole incisions with minimal scarring
- →Lower wound infection rate compared to open appendectomy
- →Faster return to work, school, and normal activities
- →Allows thorough exploration of the abdomen if diagnosis is uncertain
- →Reduced post-operative pain and shorter hospital stay
- →Particularly beneficial in obese patients and young women
Laparoscopic appendectomy is the right operation for most patients with appendicitis — especially young women, where it also allows us to rule out gynaecological causes. The visualisation and recovery advantages are genuine.
