Laparoscopic Hernia Repair (TEP / TAPP – Inguinal)

Laparoscopic Hernia Repair (TEP / TAPP – Inguinal)

Inguinal hernias are repaired through three small keyhole incisions using TEP (Totally Extra-Peritoneal) or TAPP (Trans-Abdominal Pre-Peritoneal) technique — with rapid recovery and minimal pain.

What is Laparoscopic Hernia Repair (TEP / TAPP – Inguinal)?

Laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair is a minimally invasive surgical technique that repairs groin hernias by placing a reinforcing mesh behind the abdominal wall muscles through three small keyhole incisions. TEP works entirely outside the peritoneum, while TAPP enters the abdominal cavity to access the hernia defect. Dr. Abhishek performs both techniques at Lux Hospitals using high-definition laparoscopy and lightweight anatomical mesh, offering patients shorter hospital stays, less post-operative pain, and a faster return to work compared to open repair.

How the Procedure Works

1

General Anaesthesia

Patient is positioned supine; general anaesthesia is administered with the abdomen prepared and draped.

2

Port Placement

Three small (5–10 mm) keyhole incisions are made — one near the umbilicus and two lower on the abdomen.

3

Hernia Dissection

The hernia sac is identified, reduced, and the pre-peritoneal or extra-peritoneal space is carefully dissected.

4

Mesh Placement

A lightweight anatomical mesh is positioned to cover all potential hernia sites and fixed with tackers or glue.

5

Closure

Instruments are removed, peritoneum is closed (in TAPP), and skin incisions are closed with absorbable sutures.
