Laparoscopic Ventral / Incisional Hernia Repair
Ventral and incisional hernias are repaired laparoscopically with intra-peritoneal mesh placement (IPOM) — avoiding large scars and dramatically reducing wound complications.
What is Laparoscopic Ventral / Incisional Hernia Repair?
Laparoscopic ventral or incisional hernia repair addresses hernias that develop at the site of a previous surgical incision or at weak points in the anterior abdominal wall. Through 3–4 small keyhole ports, the hernia contents are reduced and a specialised dual-layer composite mesh is fixed on the inner surface of the abdominal wall (IPOM technique). Dr. Abhishek performs this at Lux Hospitals, offering patients reduced wound complications, lower infection rates, and a faster return to normal life compared to traditional open repair.
How the Procedure Works
Anaesthesia & Positioning
General anaesthesia is given; patient is positioned supine with arms tucked; abdomen is prepared.
Port Placement
3–4 laparoscopic ports are placed away from the hernia site to allow safe entry and good triangulation.
Adhesiolysis & Reduction
Adhesions are carefully released and hernia contents are reduced back into the abdominal cavity.
Mesh Fixation
A composite dual-layer mesh is introduced, positioned with 5 cm overlap, and fixed with tackers or transfascial sutures.
Closure
Ports are removed under vision, fascia at larger ports is closed, and skin incisions are sutured.
Outcomes
Who Needs This Treatment?
- →Avoids the large midline incision of open repair
- →Significantly lower rates of wound infection and skin breakdown
- →Reduced post-operative pain and earlier mobilisation
- →Ideal for patients with obesity or prior abdominal surgery
- →Shorter hospital stay and faster return to daily activities
- →Composite mesh designed to prevent bowel adhesions
Ventral hernia repair has been transformed by laparoscopy — we can now offer patients with complex incisional hernias a safe, durable repair without reopening large scars or risking wound breakdown.
