Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)
Radiofrequency energy delivered through a catheter heats the vein wall to seal the refluxing saphenous vein — gentle, effective, and with less bruising than laser.
What is Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)?
Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) is a minimally invasive treatment for saphenous vein reflux using controlled radiofrequency energy. A catheter with a heating element is inserted into the refluxing vein under ultrasound guidance; the catheter delivers radiofrequency energy in 7 cm segments, heating the vein wall to 120°C and sealing it. Compared to EVLA, RFA tends to cause less post-procedure bruising and discomfort. Dr. Abhishek offers RFA at Lux Hospitals as an excellent option for patients seeking durable vein closure with the gentlest recovery.
How the Procedure Works
Duplex Assessment
The refluxing saphenous vein is mapped, and entry point is selected for catheter access.
Vein Access
A small puncture under ultrasound guidance allows introduction of a sheath into the vein.
Tumescent Anaesthesia
Dilute local anaesthetic surrounds the vein, providing pain relief and protecting nearby tissues.
RFA Treatment
The catheter is positioned and energy is delivered in 7 cm segments at 120°C for controlled vein closure.
Compression
Leg is wrapped in compression; patient walks immediately and is discharged the same day.
Outcomes
Who Needs This Treatment?
- →Less post-operative bruising compared to laser ablation
- →Reliable controlled energy delivery in defined segments
- →Same-day discharge — walk-in, walk-out procedure
- →Excellent long-term closure rates equivalent to EVLA
- →Quick return to work and normal activities within 1–3 days
- →Performed under local tumescent anaesthesia — no GA needed
Radiofrequency ablation gives reliable, gentle vein closure with controlled energy delivery. For patients who want minimal bruising and a quick return to normal life, it is an excellent option for saphenous reflux.
