Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA)
Laser energy is delivered through a thin fibre inside the refluxing vein to seal it shut — walk-in, walk-out treatment with no scars and same-day return to work.
What is Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA)?
Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) is a minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins caused by saphenous vein reflux. Under ultrasound guidance and local tumescent anaesthesia, a thin laser fibre is introduced into the refluxing vein through a tiny puncture; laser energy is delivered as the fibre is withdrawn, sealing the vein along its length. The body gradually reabsorbs the closed vein, redirecting blood flow to healthy veins. Dr. Abhishek performs EVLA at Lux Hospitals — a walk-in, walk-out procedure with excellent durability and almost no downtime.
How the Procedure Works
Duplex Mapping
The refluxing vein is mapped under ultrasound; the entry point and treatment length are planned.
Vein Access
A small needle puncture is made; a sheath and laser fibre are introduced into the vein under ultrasound.
Tumescent Anaesthesia
Dilute local anaesthetic is injected around the vein to numb, compress, and protect surrounding tissues.
Laser Delivery
Laser energy is delivered as the fibre is withdrawn at a controlled rate, sealing the vein along its length.
Compression
The leg is wrapped in a compression bandage or stocking; patient walks out and resumes activity.
Outcomes
Who Needs This Treatment?
- →Walk-in, walk-out — no general anaesthesia or hospital stay
- →No surgical incisions — only a tiny needle puncture
- →Same-day return to most activities and work within 1–3 days
- →Excellent long-term closure rates (>95% at 5 years)
- →Lower risk of nerve injury than open vein stripping
- →Treatment can be combined with phlebectomy for tributaries
Endovenous laser ablation has transformed varicose vein treatment — patients walk in with bulging painful veins and walk out with the underlying problem solved, no scars, and back to normal life within days.
