COMMON BENIGN TUMOUR
Lipoma
A soft, slow-growing lump of fatty tissue that develops under the skin — almost always harmless, but removable through a quick day-care procedure when large, painful, or cosmetically bothersome.
ABOUT THIS CONDITION
What is Lipoma
A lipoma is a benign tumour made up of mature fat cells, enclosed within a thin capsule and growing slowly just beneath the skin. Most lipomas are small, soft, rubbery, and movable — felt as a painless lump most commonly on the trunk, shoulders, neck, or arms. While they rarely cause health problems, they can become bothersome when they grow larger, press on nearby nerves (causing pain), or develop in visible areas. Multiple lipomas can occur (a condition called lipomatosis) and may run in families. Surgical excision is simple, effective, and definitive — done under local anaesthesia as a day-care procedure. Dr. Abhishek Katha performs neat, cosmetic lipoma removal at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad.
